A 24-year-old university student (names withheld) was rescued by residents of a compound in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, after she was assaulted by her boyfriend during a disagreement over pregnancy.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, when the assaulted student informed her boyfriend that she was pregnant, the disclosure of which led to a heated disagreement among the duo after the man told her to terminate the pregnancy.

According to reports, the pregnant student raised concerns over the decision to terminate the pregnancy, expressing her unwillingness to undergo another abortion amid concern about the possible consequences to her health.

The argument escalated when the man slapped her and subsequently attacked her physically, which caused a commotion and attracted the attention of other residents in the vicinity who rushed to the boyfriend's residence to intervene.

Among those that intervened was an elderly married woman and senior resident of the vicinity, who repeatedly cautioned the man against beating the student, and confronted him, reminding him that he had been warned several times to stop assaulting the student.

“I've told you to stop beating this girl. Do you want to kill her? Can't you see that she is struggling to breathe? If something happens to her, do you know that her family could take legal action against you? Do you want to spend the rest of your life in jail?” the woman reportedly asked.

The situation became more urgent when the residents discovered that the student who is asthmatic, was struggling to breathe, as the assault had left her in severe distress, prompting the woman to call on other residents to help get transportation to take the victim to the hospital immediately.

The residents moved her outside to help her get fresh air while others searched for her inhaler before they subsequently arranged transportation and rushed her to the General Hospital in Agbarho, where she received medical attention.

At the hospital, medical personnel attended to the student and informed those who had accompanied her that the pregnancy was intact. They also said that failure to receive timely medical attention could have resulted in serious complications.

The July 21 incident was not the first time the student had experienced physical violence in the relationship, as residents said the assaulter had been warned several times to stop but had repeatedly continued in his assault of her over disagreements and other issues.

It was said that on an earlier occasion, the student sustained a serious injury to her left eye after being assaulted. She received prompt medical attention, which prevented further damage to the eye.

The repeated incidents had raised concerns among residents, particularly the elderly woman. Following the latest incident, the student's parents were informed about the situation and became involved.

The incident has drawn attention to the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of timely intervention when victims are exposed to repeated physical abuse.

The intervention of the residents was particularly significant because the student's breathing difficulties, combined with the physical assault, placed her in a potentially dangerous situation.
