MICN: Championing Breast Cancer Awareness and Maternal Healthcare in Delta

As the global world marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrated every year from October 1 to October 31, tagged as "Pink October", the Moms and Infant Care Network (MICN) Global, founded by Dr. Praise Ebimaye Tangbe Ari, has taken the campaign in a vigorous effort to awaken in women and girls the need for early detection.

The 2026 MICN campaign held at the College of Education Warri on Saturday (October 17, 2026) as part of the global observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month aimed to bring its message of hope and awareness to communities in Delta State.

The campaign began with a rally which included a five kilometre (5K) run and walk, and featured free health screenings of women and girls among other activities to raise awareness about breast cancer.

For the 5K run and walk which was in the categories of male and female, cash prizes for the top five finishers in each category were awarded. First-place winners went home with ₦100,000 each, second-place winners ₦75,000 each, third-place winners ₦60,000 each, fourth-place winners ₦50,000 each, and fifth-place winners ₦30,000 each.

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide and it is also a leading cause of cancer mortality among women. According to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) symptoms include: a new lump or mass in the breast or underarm, changes in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast; skin dimpling, puckering, or redness; nipple discharge other than breast milk (such as bloody discharge), and inversion or tenderness of the nipple.

According to the MICN, breast cancer risk can be reduced by maintaining a healthy weight and to engage in regular physical activity; limit alcohol consumption and avoid tobacco use; and breastfeed infants if possible.

Early detection and screening recommendations include self-examinations on monthly basis to notice any unusual changes early, and regular clinical screenings for women aged 40 and older including yearly mammograms.

But beyond Breast Cancer Awareness, the MICN is a dedicated organization that is committed to improving the health and well-being of mothers, children, and families, according to its website (micnglobal.org).

"We provide comprehensive care support services for pregnant women and their families, striving to create a healthy and happy community. Our history is rooted in a commitment to addressing the disparities in maternal and child health through active community engagement and partnerships.

"Our mission is to foster an equitable environment that protects, improves, and promotes optimal health and well-being for mothers, children, and families. We achieve this through collaboration with government agencies, community-based organizations, healthcare providers, academic and research institutions, faith-based entities, families, and advocates.

"By working together, we aim to address inequalities in access to reproductive, maternal, and newborn health care services," it stated.

The organisation which collaborates with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, the Esther Mathew Tonlagha (EMT) Foundation, and the Tompolo Foundation, said it is open to welcome donations and sponsorships from individuals, organizations, and businesses who share in their commitment to improving maternal and child health.

Over the years it has continued to push the narrative in Breast Cancer Awareness and Maternal Healthcare with many across creek, rural and urban communities beneitting from its initiatives.
