WARRI SOUTH-WEST: INEC Report Implementation Advances Electoral Justice — Chief Ebike, Commends Stakeholders
Chief (Mrs.) Ebike Marian Anumuogharan, the Miyenkeremo-ere of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom and Women Leader in Delta Oil & Gas, Ijaw Ethnic Nationality, has said that the implementation of the fresh ward delineation report, ordered by the Supreme Court and carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the three Warri local government areas making up the Warri Federal Constituency, is a step forward in the advancement of electoral justice.
In a press statement made available to the media, the former House of Assembly candidate described the implementation as a significant milestone in the quest for electoral justice, fairness, and equitable political representation, particularly for the Ijaw people of Warri South-West Local Government Area.
According to Chief Ebike, who noted that the previous ward structure had disadvantaged the Ijaw ethnic nationality for many years, limiting their political participation and effective representation despite their population strength, revealed that, as a victim of the former ward allocation system and a former Mega Progressives People's Party (MP3) House of Assembly candidate in 2011, she had long awaited the day justice would prevail.
She explained that although the new delineation did not fully meet the expectations of the Ijaw people, it represents a major correction of decades of political exclusion and imbalance.
"The implementation of the INEC report has changed the political landscape. Warri South-West now has 11 wards for the Ijaw people and nine wards for the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, compared to the previous allocation of four and six wards respectively. The report also created an additional Delta State House of Assembly constituency and recommended the establishment of Warri Federal Constituency II covering Warri North and Warri South-West Local Government Areas," she stated.
The Miyenkeremo-ere commended INEC for carrying out what she described as its constitutional responsibility despite the pressures surrounding the exercise, and noted that the development would promote greater grassroots participation in governance, strengthen democratic institutions, and provide a more equitable platform for the people to pursue development and enjoy the dividends of democracy.
The community leader also expressed appreciation to prominent Ijaw leaders and stakeholders, including His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaraun II (JP), Aketekpe, Agadagba, Pere of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom; High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo); Mr. Matthew Tonlagha; High Chief Godspower Gbenekama (JP); and Chief (Mrs.) Vero Emmanuel (JP), for their commitment to sustaining peace throughout the process.
She further acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders across the Warri Federal Constituency, including the Alaowei of Warri Kingdom, Chief Denbo-denbofa Oweikpodor, Chief Olorogun Victor Okumagba, Chief John Eranvor, Chief Arthur Akpodubakaye, Chief Femi Okumagba, Chief David Reje, Pastor Samuel Ako, and others for supporting a peaceful and transparent exercise.
Chief Ebike stressed that the outcome of the ward delineation should not be interpreted as the "victory of one ethnic group over another, but rather as a triumph of justice, democracy, and fairness."
She called on Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, and other ethnic nationalities within the constituency to embrace the new political reality with maturity and work together to promote peaceful coexistence, inclusive governance, and sustainable development.
The former political contestant also urged political leaders, youth groups, community stakeholders, and residents to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric capable of undermining public peace, while encouraging all political actors to remain committed to issue-based campaigns and democratic principles ahead of future elections under the new ward structure.
She concluded that the implementation of the fresh ward delineation provides a unique opportunity to build a “Warri Federal Constituency where every community is fairly represented, every vote counts, and every citizen has an equal opportunity to participate in shaping the future of the constituency.”
