ESCRAVOS–LAGOS PIPELINE: NGIC activates Business Continuity Plan

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has said that the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), operator of the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) that was recently affected by an explosion, has activated its "Business Continuity Plan to manage the impact on all affected stakeholders, including shippers and suppliers."

The national oil company gave the update in a press statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, containing the recent development on the incident, and dated Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Though it did not give much details, the statement however noted that after inspection, affected sections of the pipeline has been successfully isolated while guaranteeing the safety of host communities, the environment, and flexibility of its operations.

The NNPCL which said its communication lines are open to host communities, state authorities and other stakeholders, thanked them for their support. 

The statement reads, "NNPC Limited is providing an update on the incident reported on Thursday, 11th December 2025, on a section of the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in South West Warri, Delta State.

"Coordinated containment measures have been successfully executed, ensuring the safety of host communities, personnel, and the environment. All relevant pipeline sections have been safely and securely isolated.

"A joint preliminary inspection involving NNPC Limited, the Nigeria Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) technical teams, and maintenance contractors has been conducted at the affected site.

"NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), the operator of the network, has activated its Business Continuity Plan to manage the impact on all affected stakeholders, including shippers and suppliers."

"NNPC Ltd continues to maintain open communication with host communities, state authorities, and other critical stakeholders, and appreciates their sustained support and cooperation. The Company remains committed to the safety of its host communities, the protection of the environment, and the reliability of its operations across all assets," it stated.

Recall that the NNPCL had confirmed a breach on the pipeline near Tebujor, Okpele-ama, and Ikpokpo communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West local government area of Delta State, on Thursday, December 11, 2025. 

The ELPS, a natural gas pipeline, was built in 1989 to supply gas from Escravos region of the Niger Delta area to the Egbin power station near Lagos in Nigeria.
